Planning is underway for the 2010 Amigos Days, the popular NTC outreach program connecting churches throughout the Metroplex as members work in service to homeowners unable to repair and paint their own home exteriors. Work dates for 2010 will be April 16-17 and 23-24.

The joyful noise Amigos volunteers make to the Lord is filled with the sounds of power tools, paint scrapers, hammering and happy banter among the workers.

In its first 12 years, Amigos Days completed 314 home projects in Dallas, while 14 urban UM churches have participated as host locations, providing support and offering hospitality to workers. Amigos Days projects have also included extensive repairs and improvements to the host churches, adding to the success of the program.

The People Helping People Department of the City of Dallas serves as an invaluable partner by locating eligible homes, qualifying owners and supplying the majority of the building materials and paint needed to transform the structures.

Longtime Amigos coordinator Rev. Diane Presley could no longer serve in that capacity due to her appointment change last June. Ann Meyer, University Park UMC, has been appointed as the new coordinator. She worked closely with Rev. Presley and is very familiar with the program.

Meyer is an energetic leader who has Methodist roots that go as deep as one can go in the North Texas Conference. Her great-great-grandmother was Nancy Jane Cochran, who deeded land for the very first deeded church property in the county.

She will work with Rev. Marji Bishir, Associate Director of Connectional Ministries and Volunteers in Mission Coordinator for the conference. Please contact Meyer at amigoscoordinator@ntcumc.org or phone 214-683-5409 for more information or ways that a congregation can become part of the Amigos team.
